30 Hopefully Interesting Facts About Me

30 Hopefully Interesting Facts About Me

If you live in the south of England, you most likely are familiar with the little gem that is Brighton. I am very lucky to live within a ten minute train journey from an abundance of vegan cafes, a shopping centre and of course, the beach which remains beautiful even on gloomier days. I can’t say I was 100% content with standing bare-legged under the most unpleasant drizzle (I am the sort of person who holds back from wearing tights until it is far too cold to consider otherwise) but nothing brings peace to my heart as much as gazing at an expanse of water. And of course, blog photos are not going to take themselves!

Brighton Beach

The central purpose of this post, however, is not to dwell on the beauty of my local area. I always find it interesting to learn about the people behind my favourite blogs, and since I’ve been blogging consistently on here for slightly over a month, I believe the time has come to do your generic ’30, hopefully interesting, facts about me’. Since scheduling this I’ve been nominated for the Liebster award (thank you Joy!) which I will undertake in the upcoming weeks – so in short, buckle your seatbelts and uncover what lies beyond my ability to make pretty food in jars πŸ˜‰.

Get to know me

Get to Know me 2

1. Let’s start with the basics: my name is Maria, I am 18 years old and as established above, I live near Brighton in the south of England.
2. I am almost 100% Russian with a bit of Ukrainian and Greek mixed in (hence I tan easier than most Russian people).
3. Next year, I will be starting a history degree but for now I am embracing the opportunity that has been given to me to take a gap year, gain work experience and travel like every basic teenage girl ever.
4. I am trying excessively hard not to start each fact with ‘I’ or ‘my’ but this is thirty facts about ME which perfectly justifies a bit of self indulgence!
5. I think chewing gum should be made illegal because the noise is simply. too. much.
6. Growing up, big chain restaurants virtually didn’t exist in Russia, and healthy eating has always been a big part of my life because a non-Westernised Russian diet contains many fruits, vegetables, legumes etc which is very reflective of how I eat now (with the exception of no animal products).
7. When we first arrived in England, my mum and I laughed for a solid ten minutes when we realised that her partner didn’t randomly buy a car with the steering wheel ‘on the wrong side’ – this was, in fact, true for the whole country.
8. I’ve never had a boyfriend.
9. My favourite fiction book is probably ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr. If you haven’t read it yet and like your heart to be shattered into a million pieces, go and do it asap.
10. The only film I’ve ever cried at was Marley and Me. But, even my grandma cried at this film and she didn’t even speak English.

Me on Brighton Beach
11. Speaking of my grandma, she was a prominent Communist party member before the Soviet Union inevitably collapsed and had an enormous influence on my defining characteristics: she taught me the value of hard work, intellectual integrity and connection to the world around us. The fact that she died before witnessing my main achievements in life (thus far) makes me immensely sad because without her lessons, they may not have been possible.
12. Once you get to know me, I admit I can be quite the drama queen – I think my irl bestie Jess who is also a blogger and a much funnier one than I am – and justify this trait by saying ‘we need greater emotional transparency in our society’!
13. I have an impassioned love-hate relationship with trains: I love how they can get me across the country in a short space of time, but hate some things trains do (e.g. being cancelled at the last minute) and things some people do on trains (e.g. eating crisps and refusing to move their bags off empty seats).
14. My favourite season has to be late Spring/ early Summer (sorry Autumn lovers!) – I love it when every tree is a fresh shade of green and the air smells like blossoms. Everything feels fresh and renewed at this time of year which fills my heart with so much optimism after the colder months, not to mention my birthday is at the end of May.
15. Except for in the run up to Christmas and the summer holidays when I have much more time on my hands, and the occasional documentary in the morning, I do not watch movies and TV series very often. There’s no particular reason for this except for the lack of TV-watching in my childhood, and while I will watch films the genre/subject matter of which appeals to me (the Batman trio totally stole my heart!), I have not seen many ‘classics’ such as High School Musical and Mama Mia and the fake laugh I do whenever references come up in conversations is the most awkward thing out there.

Facts about me
16. I’d say my sense of humour is definitely on the dry and cynical side, as opposed to quirky.
17. Up until as late as around 2013, I dreamt of becoming a pilot like my dad, but my horrendous eyesight and a tendency to sweat profusely at the slightest bit of turbulence highlight the futility of that goal.

18. I am a weird mixture of an introvert and an extrovert. In ‘formal’ settings, such as school, work, networking events, etc, I am outgoing and enjoy working with other people. However, my social circle has always been quite small. This was a source of embarrassment for me in my early teenage years as everyone placed so much emphasis on popularity, yet growing up I realised the principle of quality over quantity in terms of friendships and accepted what I am like as a person.
19. I am 65,000 words into writing a political thriller and I’m praying that I will find the willpower to finish it one day.
20. Despite weightlifting consistently for 3-4 years, I do not look like a man just yet! The gym is my ‘me-time’ and a form of self care: nothing helps me eliminate stress as much as a hard workout accompanied by good music.
21. I spent years of my life blinded by scepticism but have recently become a firm believer in the law of attraction after unknowingly using it twice for my exam results. I ended up coming across a YouTube video about it a few months ago and got chills because throughout my life, my mindset has always reflected physical reality. The energy you release into the universe is what you will receive in return, 100%.
22. My mum almost called me Polina (Polly) and I always wonder how my life would have played out differently with a different name.
23. I adore meeting people from different cultures and finding out about their countries, their lives and their values. Being an immigrant myself, I always find I share a lot of experience with people who weren’t born in this country and it is always super interesting to compare England with our respective backgrounds.
24. I once had a turtle called Erda and I have no clue in heck where that name came from. Most people assume it is a Russian word but I highly doubt it exists anywhere outside my own vocabulary.

25. Urban Outfitters and Topshop will always be my favourite clothing stores because my style changes so much and they seem to have items to suit whatever it is at a given moment; and while I understand the benefits of online shopping I prefer the traditional shopping experience because to me, it is a social activity and I love having the freedom to try on thousands of items before picking my favourite.
26. Speaking of change, I had difficulty getting through customs this summer when travelling home from Russia because my Russian passport photo (taken 2015) looked so different to my British passport photo (taken early 2017) which in turn didn’t match how I look at the moment! The fact that I had a bright purple pixie cut in 2015 probably explains that..
27. I once got myself and a friend lost in a forest on purpose to see whether my mum would take it seriously and by the time we’d scrambled back, she had gathered a full on search party. At least I know she definitely cares about her only child!
28. My favourite conversations are of the ‘what everyone is thinking, but no one wants to say’ type.
29. It’s difficult to accurately convey my personality in thirty facts because I’m a mixture of many different traits which shows just how inaccurate it is to ‘categorise’ people. I am a calm person who is usually in bed by 10:30 (please don’t judge me too much for this one), yet I love having jokey conversations over a pizza and going on new adventures. I like to aim for a balance between modesty and confidence. One of the things that I’ve loved the most about the blogging world is having people say they can relate to something because at times I can feel either isolated or embarrassed about one of my emotional traits, and if just one person says they understand, I immediately want to give them a high five through the screen.

30. Although a lot of my blog is about food I haven’t mentioned many food-related facts, so let’s wrap this up by saying that I have an enormous appetite (yet this also applies to travel, knowledge and self-discovery – not just lentil bolognese, contrary to popular belief, lol) and my favourite cuisine is either Japanese or Mexican! I mean, who doesn’t love a huge burrito bowl after a long day of dealing with this very nuanced world.

I do apologise for the randomness of these facts but in my opinion, little things and stories are much more interesting than ‘1. MY FAVOURITE COLOUR IS GREEN! 2. I HAVE TWO CATS!’ (my favourite colour is actually navy and the number of cats I own is one, but that was for example’s sake).

Get to know me 3

I’d think that was an utterly exhausting read so thank you if you are still here, and now I invite you to share three interesting facts about yourself in the comments! Getting to know the lovely people who read this little blog is always so much fun.

Much love, Maria ❀️

I relate to being an introvert/extrovert combination far too well. But I do think it has its perks, for sure. Constantly social and doing things, small inner circle.

    • whatismaria October 5, 2017 / 7:59 pm

Omg yes that is so true! I definitely enjoy spending time with people, especially when it’s my closest friends, which definitely shows that it doesn’t have to be purely one or the other 😊 Glad I’m not the only one!

Aww thank you so much Angela – I am happy to hear you liked it! And that is so cool that you ended up marrying your first boyfriend:) And I can definitely relate that it is not something I thought about much throughout school, I feel like once I start at university it will be much easier to meet someone than at this stage in my life! Thank you very much for your comment <3

  9. crystalsandcurls October 6, 2017 / 8:52 am

Loved reading this – you’re a really interesting person! Also, wow I never knew you were Russian! It must be so different living here, but what an amazing gift to have lived and experience the culture of two different places. <3

    • whatismaria October 6, 2017 / 11:07 am

Aww thank you so much! That means a lot to me 😊 And yes most people do not realise until I tell them because while I do have a slight accent everyone assumes it’s just a regional British one lol. There are MANY differences between the two countries and I’ve actually been thinking about doing a blog post about that as most people know very little about what it’s like to live in Russia! Xox

  10. Demilade October 6, 2017 / 9:55 am

Totally enjoyed learning these facts about you Maria! I’m also on a gap year at the moment πŸ™‚ // I can so relate to the thing about having not watched some ‘classic’ films. // Sameee, I prefer to shop for clothes in person// And I also go to bed around 10. Wow, we have a lot in common haha. Great post! xx

Haha same here, I always plan to watch them but it never works out. I would love to study Medicine, you?

Girl you’re so lucky to live in Brighton!! I live a few hours away & have never been but I’m dying to take a little road trip there at some point, Urban Outfitters is my favourite clothes shop too – most of my wardrobe is from there! I’m absolutely obsessed .xxx

    • whatismaria October 6, 2017 / 4:42 pm

You should definitely come and visit Brighton one day – I will be here to welcome you:) It is such a wonderful town and has a great Urban Outfitters store as well! I always find that no matter how many other places I shop at, all of my favourite items come from there. xox

  13. Rosie October 6, 2017 / 6:36 pm

I really enjoyed reading this, I love getting to know people. When did you first move to England? I’m like you, a mix of introvert and extrovert. Sometimes, I can be quite confident and other times I just get mentally exhausted by being around people.

    • whatismaria October 6, 2017 / 7:40 pm

I’m so glad to hear that! I can agree that getting to know people is always super interesting:) I moved in the summer of 2009 so I’ve been here for over 9 years at this point! And that describes me perfectly – I do love talking to people and being around them but need the occasional time out hahah.

  14. Mia October 7, 2017 / 3:02 am

I just recently discovered your blog and I loved getting to know you better through this post! I’m also an introvert AND extrovert (though I would say more on the side of introvert), I love Urban and Topshop, hate the smacking noise of chewing gum, love to eat (I’m not vegan, but still love hearing about people’s views on food), and working out is such a stress reliever for me! It’s so interesting to hear about your cultural background and family. You seem like an interesting person in general, in a good way of course, haha πŸ™‚

    • whatismaria October 7, 2017 / 5:49 am

Hi Mia! Thank you very much for stopping by and it’s so cool to hear that you can relate to some of this and understand my pain when it comes to dealing with chewing gum and being and introvert/extrovert at the same time (I’m definitely more on the side of the introvert as well!). Thanks so much for reading and I hope you have a lovely weekend:) xox

  15. jennandcherries October 7, 2017 / 1:51 pm

Oh my gosh I also live in Brighton!! It’s nice to see a blogger that also lives here. Cool post by the way πŸ™‚

  16. Audrey October 7, 2017 / 2:59 pm

    6. It’s good to be born into the habit of a healthy diet! πŸ˜€ // 9. I loved that book :’) // 12. So cool how you and your BFF are both bloggers! // 15. I didn’t watch very much TV until I got to high school, and I think because I was “deprived” of it for so long, I started watching tons of TV shows! So the effect was opposite for me haha // 18. I think everyone’s a mix of both πŸ™‚ Though some might be mixed more evenly than others πŸ˜› // 19. That’s so impressive! Good luck with finishing! // 24. That’s such a lovely name ^-^ -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

    • whatismaria October 7, 2017 / 7:00 pm

Hi Audrey! Thank you so much for stopping by and for your lovely comment πŸ™‚ I have a feeling that I will soon get into movies/TV shows as well because I have quite a few that I want to watch (this includes most of the Harry Potter films haha) so I can imagine myself picking up the habit! And I am glad you like the name of my foregone turtle hahah, she was definitely a precious creature:’) Hope you’re having a wonderful Saturday xox

  17. Nemorino October 7, 2017 / 9:53 pm

Erda is the name of a character in two operas by Richard Wagner, “Rheingold” and “Siegfried”. So maybe that’s where your turtle’s name came from.

  18. Dippy-Dotty Girl October 7, 2017 / 10:11 pm

Each point made me smile. Loved this post, and knowing more about you. Thirty is hardly enough to sum up a whole life even though you are just 18 πŸ™‚ xx

    • whatismaria October 8, 2017 / 5:40 am

That is so sweet of you! Thank you so much for reading, and yes that is definitely true – initially I was worried I wouldn’t be able to come up with 30 but it was actually the other way round:) <3

      • Dippy-Dotty Girl October 8, 2017 / 3:54 pm

It must have been like a river flooding a plain. Difficult to hold yourself back πŸ™‚

    • whatismaria October 8, 2017 / 5:41 am

Hahah I am glad I’m not the only one! Thank you for reading xo

  19. Howdoigrownup October 8, 2017 / 11:56 am

Love this post, it’s wonderful getting to know you! I also hate chewing gum, I allow it in my classroom but often repeat “you can chew gum, sure, but don’t be a jerk about it.” I have one girl specifically who totally unconsciously pops it loudly. Drives me nuts.
Oh and you’re an ambivert! There’s been a ton of research about the mix recently.

    • whatismaria October 8, 2017 / 12:31 pm

Lol yes I can totally agree with this, it’s fine if people do it but keep the noise under control and refrain from excessive bubble popping πŸ˜‚ It’s great that I posted this because I have never even heard the term ambivert before but it is great to know there is a word for it! Thank you so much for stopping by ❀️

  20. preppypinkpiglet October 8, 2017 / 12:54 pm

Thank you so much for reading!! Xox

  21. Nata October 8, 2017 / 3:20 pm

Loooved the randomness, sounds like you had an amazing grandma ! I speak Russian as well btw πŸ™‚

    • whatismaria October 8, 2017 / 3:46 pm

Yes she was an incredible person! And that is so cool – I’ve had trouble keeping it up to be honest as I’ve been here for such a long time hahah. Xx

  22. Hunida October 10, 2017 / 8:56 am

Lol, to be honest, I did my favorite color and how many cats I own in my thirty facts about myself. πŸ˜› I definitely agree that the little story facts are much more interesting to read. I can’t believe you made your mom call on a whole search party for you! That’s so funny. I also prefer shopping irl because I like trying things on and physically seeing the things I’ll be purchasing. I also 100% believe in the law of attraction. Are you a Gemini, by chance??

    • whatismaria October 10, 2017 / 1:25 pm

Hahah well there are exceptions as favourite colours can reveal a lot about people! plus, doesn’t love cats ;D I can definitely agree that seeing things physically can be so useful especially as I never trust clothing sizes! And nope I am a Taurus, I’m guessing you’re a Gemini yourself? 😊

      • Hunida October 11, 2017 / 12:34 am

        My mom’s a Taurus, ah! Lol, yes, I’m a Gemini. πŸ™‚

  23. kittyp0p October 11, 2017 / 11:04 pm

Polina what a great name that is. I never heard it before but it sounds amazing. Great to get to know you better lovely, these facts were indeed interesting. xx

    • whatismaria October 12, 2017 / 10:48 am

  26. kirstyjadeblog October 12, 2017 / 4:24 pm

Lovely post and gorgeous photos as well! I really want to take a gap year before Uni too, I just think that if I don’t take time out now, I may get caught up in everything and miss out on travelling experience! Where would you most like to visit next? xx

    • whatismaria October 12, 2017 / 5:11 pm

Omg thank you so much! I am so glad you like it:) And yes gap years can be really good to work, travel, and gain new experiences and if you think that you will regret not taking one, you should totally go for it! And I am thinking of places like Bali/China/Japan – I have not been to many countries in Asia and would love to go. What about you? xox

      • kirstyjadeblog October 12, 2017 / 6:15 pm

Ooh yes I have never been to any Asian countries which would be a fab experience! At the moment next on my list is definitely Berlin! xx

I loved this post so much, particularly points 7 and 27πŸ˜‚ xx

    • whatismaria October 12, 2017 / 7:49 pm

Haha thank you so much! Those were some interesting times in my life πŸ˜‚ xox

  28. Nemee October 12, 2017 / 6:50 pm

You should definitely study history in uni! I got my degree in history and loved (almost) every minute of it, and current events make much more sense now. I can also fully relate to how beautiful beaches can be in gloomy weather, I lived on the west coast of Canada for a few years and I loved going to the beach whether it was summer or winter.

    • whatismaria October 12, 2017 / 7:52 pm

I’ve studied history in school for around four years and it has always been my favourite subject – I am so glad to hear you’ve had a positive experience! I sent off my application a few days ago and I am so excited to start already πŸ˜‚ And it’s great that you agree – beaches this time of year are definitely underrated! ❀️

      • Nemee October 12, 2017 / 8:01 pm

That’s so exciting! I just finished this past summer but I remember so vividly getting my acceptance letter and being so excited to start something new. Hopefully you’ll love it as much as I did. Good luck!

  29. Veronica M. October 12, 2017 / 8:07 pm

Girl I loved reading and learning more about you through these facts! I can definitely agree with what you said about the importance of quality over quantity in friendships-my social circle isn’t huge as well but I’ve finally grown to be okay with that too. Xxx ❀

    • whatismaria October 13, 2017 / 4:49 am

I’m glad you agree because having a group of close friends that you can rely on is so important! Thank you so much for reading and for your lovely comment ❀️

Omg that’s so cool – hopefully you love it just as much as I do! And I use the canon EOS 100D – it’s not that fancy at all for a DSLR but it gets the job done 😊I’m so glad you like my photos though! ❀️
